How to Identify Tree Fungus

There are many types of tree fungus such as honey fungus, tinder fungus, beefsteak fungus, dwarf benches and puffballs. Here are some tips on how to identify tree fungus.

Tree Fungal Diseases

There are 4 categories of plant diseases caused by fungi. These are:

Butt and Root rot diseases – initially infects the roots and then other parts.

Canker diseases – infects the bark tissue, which results in discolored or sunken barks.

Shoot or foliar diseases – most common and can be identified by the appearance of small spots or large blotches on the leaves and shoots.

Vascular diseases - plant dies very soon due the damaged vascular system.



How to Identify Tree Fungus

Here are some common types of tree fungi and their certain characteristics.


Honey Fungus

It grows in small tufts and clumps.

Cap color - yellowish-brown

Shape - convex to conical with a depression at the center


Beefsteak Fungus

It looks like a tongue.

Color - Reddish-brown

Surface – rough

The underside is creamy-white in color and is filled with minute pores. It is commonly found in sweet chestnut and oak.


Tinder Fungus

Tinder fungus is also known as horse's hoof fungus.

This type of fungus is commonly found on birch and beech trees.


Tree Fungus Treatment Tips

  • Try to maintain a healthy tree, as this is the best defense against fungus.
  • Apply fertilizer at regular intervals.
  • Use a fungicide to prevent the growth of fungi.
