How to sprout an avocado seed



Avocados are gaining popularity day by day because of its many health benefits. An avocado it good source of dietary fiber, vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin E, and foliate. They are used in salads, dips, etc. The pit or seed can be sprouted. The result is a interesting and attractive houseplant. Here are some tips on how to sprout an avocado.



How to sprout an avocado seed


In order to sprout an avocado seed follow some simple steps given below:



  • Remove the large seed from the center of the fruit.
  • Wash the see thoroughly with water.
  • You will see that there are two ends of an avocado seed, the broad end of the seed is considered to be the bottom and the pointed end the top.
  • Insert several toothpicks into the sides of the seed. They should be placed about halfway up the pit.
  • Now, suspend the seed in a glass of water.
  • The bottom ¼ part of the seed should rest in water.
  • The seed should sprout within a few weeks.
  • But, during sprouting period, periodically add water to maintain the initial water level.
  • If it doesn't sprout within 2 to 3 months, discard the original avocado and begin another.
  • The roots are usually the first to emerge from the seed. The stem appears later.
  • Now, pot the seedling when you feel that the root system has become well developed; the roots should be at least 2 to 3 inches long.
  • Take out the toothpicks and plant it into a six to 8 inch pot using a commercial potting mix.
  • Plant it in the center of the pot. The top of the seed should be level with the soil surface. After potting, sprinkle some water over it and then place the pot in a brightly lit location.
  • Water the plant regularly in order to keep the soil moist but, not wet.
  • Use house plant fertilizer in order to fertilize your new plant, try to fertilize once or twice a month during the spring and summer.
